Mulch and compost
Mulch and compost can reduce evaporation from soil by up to 70% acting like a blanket on the soil. It keeps the soil cool while also adding nutrients.

Water roots and soil - not flowers and leaves
This will ensure that the water goes only where it is needed most. Drip irrigation systems which are mandatory during Stage 3a water restrictions are an extremely efficient method of achieving this result while saving water at the same time.

Use water storing crystals and wetting agents
One of the problems with soil that has dried out is that it repels water, wasting the precious water you put on it. Water crystals and soil wetting agents can dramatically improve the success of new plantings and water absorption in your garden, particularly if it is already very dry. Water crystals absorb water and store it for use by the plant at a later time, while wetting agents treat the soil surface to allow water to penetrate.
