Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme

The Victorian Government's rebate scheme lets Victorians claim rebates on water saving products like three-star water efficient showerheads, upgrading to eligible dual flush toilets, garden products, rainwater tanks and systems for reusing household waste water. For further information visit: Water Smart Gardens & Homes Rebate Scheme

Be rewarded for buying and installing water smart products in your home. The Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme was extended for four more years from 1 July 2007, with some exciting new products. 

A basket of goods - $30 when you spend $100

Includes products such as mulch (includes pebbles or other inorganic materials which are used as mulch), flow control devices, soil wetting or moisture agents, compost or mulch bin, soil moisture and rain sensors, garden tap timers, drip watering system or weep hoses, trigger nozzles, temporary greywater diverters, rainwater diverters, waterless car cleaning products, shower timers and toilet flush interrupter devices. One basket offer rebate is available per eligible customer each calendar year.

A service to assess where a household could save water, and recommend products and methods that would help to do this.

Dual flush toilet - $50

A dual flush toilet uses 3 litres of water on a half flush, 6 litres on a full flush or less and a rebate is available when replacing an existing single flush toilet.

Three-star water efficient showerhead - $10 or $20

A water efficient showerhead can use 30% less water than a normal showerhead and can be fitted to most showers. Up to two showerhead rebates are available per property.

Hot Water Recirculator - $150

Hot water recirculating devices that help save the cold water which initially comes out of the hot water taps when first turned on. These devices redirect the cold water in the hot water pipes back into the household water supply until hot. This ensures that water is not wasted. 

Rainwater tank

A household rainwater tank collects rainwater for use inside or outside your home.

Tank Rebate 1:  $150 for a tank 600 litres or greater. 
Tank Rebate 2:

$500 for tank 2,000-3,999 litres connected to toilet and/or laundry
$900 for tank 4,000+ litres connected to toilet or laundry
$1,000 for tank 4000+ litres connected to toilet and laundry

Note: A plumber's receipt and Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC) Certificate of compliance is required to be eligible for rebate on Rainwater Tanks.

Rainwater tank to toilet connection - $150

A household rainwater tank collects rainwater for use inside or outside your home. An additional $150 is available for tank to toilet connection.

Permanent Greywater System - $500

A greywater permanent tank system recycles waste water from laundries and bathrooms for use on the garden or in the toilet.

How do I get the rebate?  

You can claim your rebate by downloading and completing the Water Rebates Application form. Alternatively, you can call DSE's customer service centre on 136 186 or obtain a form from your local whitegoods, hardware, plumbing supplies or garden retailer.

Do I need to attach my receipt and proof of installation?

Yes. All the information about what you need to attach is on the claim form.

When does the product need to be purchased and installed?

You must have purchased your products after 1 July 2009.

Applications for all rebates under the terms and conditions issued on 1 July 2009 must be submitted by 30 September 2011.

Products purchased prior to 1 July 2009 are still eligible for rebates set out in the terms and conditions in operation prior to 30 June 2011. Application for these rebates must be lodged by 30 September 2011.

How long does it take to get my rebate?

The rebate will be provided to you on your next water bill (except for rebates over $500 which involve a refund cheque or EFT). These refunds can take between 10-12 weeks to process.

How many rebates can I claim?

You can claim several rebates in total provided they are for different products. Terms and conditions apply. 

The $100 basket of goods can be claimed once each calendar year.

Since January 2003 there has been an overwhelming response to take part and help save water. Over 162,000 rebates have been approved helping Victorians save more than 1.4 billion litres of drinking water a year.

From 1 January 2007, Victorians on a reticulated water supply have been eligible for rebates of up to $1000 on the purchase and installation of a large rainwater tank connected to your toilet and/or laundry and installed by a licensed plumber.
