Backlog Sewerage Program

South East Water has a program to construct sewers to serve unsewered properties.

South East Water Limited has liaised with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and those Councils within its area with unsewered properties that are considered as meeting the criteria for inclusion in the program.

The process also revisited the criteria for setting the priority order for construction works and has scheduled the projects on the basis of the current government budget spend requirement. Councils involved were Mornington Peninsula, Casey, Cardinia, Yarra Ranges, Knox and Frankston.

The total number of unsewered lots included on the program is 23,000 and the total cost in today's dollars of providing sewerage services to all these unsewered lots is estimated at $400 million.

The process has been documented in the South East Water publication - Backlog Sewerage Program - Protecting the Environment and your Health. This publication also includes clearly defined plans showing which properties are included on the program and a schedule of when they are likely to be sewered.

All defined area plans have been endorsed by the respective Council Chief Executive Officers.

The program is regularly reviewed and adjustments can result from;

  • Changes in Government direction on annual spending on the program;
  • Altered priorities as a result of changes in the environmental or health conditions in an area;
  • Changes in project costs.
