The Water Patrol

How will restrictions be enforced?
As with Permanent Water Saving Rules, local water authorities will continue to rely on public to report any suspected breach of water restrictions. We have also introduced water patrols which we will be conducted in cars and on foot.

Why have you introduced water patrols?
We have introduced water patrols as we are getting tougher against people who flout the water restrictions. Water patrols will ensure that we have a stronger presence in the community around water restrictions.

How many water patrol officers are there? Who are they?
There are over 140 officers and 90 cars patrolling the streets 24 hours a day. They are employees from City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water.

How will I be able to identify water patrol officers?
Water Patrol officers will be in a vehicle with a water retailer logo on the side. Officers will also be dressed in a uniform that displays the logo of the water retailer they represent.

What will the water patrol officers do?
Water patrol officers will be looking out for residents, businesses and local councils who are not complying with water restrictions.

This includes:

Watering at the wrong time of the day

Hosing down paved areas and driveways

Using an old twist nozzle on their hose rather than a trigger nozzle

Filling a pool without permission from a water retailer

Water patrol officers will issue a warning via mail or in person to customers flouting Stage 3 restrictions. If customers are observed flouting the same restriction again, they could have their water supply restricted or face prosecution. From early 2007 onwards, they could be fined.

Water patrol officers will also visit houses where people are asking for advice, assistance on restrictions or saving water in general.
