Health and wellbeing

Our priority is to eliminate or reduce the risk of injuries and illness in our workplace. We do this by providing information, training and supervision so that our people can perform their work safely. Findings from a survey conducted in April 2011 found an overall improvement in the safety culture at South East Water. Four lost time incidents occurred during the year – all of which were investigated with strategies put in place to mitigate further incidents.

We look after our people through a comprehensive health and wellbeing program which focuses on workplace safety, mental health, nutrition and fitness. In 2011, we will partner with SANE Australia to educate employees about mental illness.

Culture

We undertook an Organisational Culture Inventory (OCI) survey to help us measure our progress towards our desired culture. These insights will help us to develop targeted action plans for our cultural improvement journey.

Our learning and development plan enhanced South East Water’s leadership development and will ensure we have the right people in the right roles at the right time. Our governance framework will build greater collaboration and input across the business.

Community Involvement

Our volunteer program provides employees with two days of leave per year to contribute their time and skills to local community initiatives. Now in its sixth year, we actively promote this program internally. During the year, 118 people volunteered more than 740 hours to undertake a range of activities, such as:118 employees volunteered

  • Planting over 4,000 trees with our partners for National Tree Day.
  • Preparing Cranbourne Secondary College’s multicultural garden for spring. This garden is maintained by Year 8 Indigenous and English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
  • Mentoring skilled migrants through our partnership with Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES).
  • Donating blood to the Red Cross Blood Service.

Recognition of service and innovation

We recognise the performance and achievements of our people in a range of ways, including:

  • The Chairman’s Serving Your Customer Award, which recognises employees who consistently demonstrate exceptional customer service.
  • The Managing Director’s Sustainability Award, which acknowledges employees who contribute innovative ideas and initiatives.

We also have an internal program that inspires employees to come up with ideas to improve the way we do business. One idea emerging from this program was the food and oil interceptor installation service. This is now offered to manufacturing and food service customers through our trade waste program.
